Conservation Law Meetings

The Department of Environment is hosting a series of public meetings over the next two weeks so that everyone will have a chance to hear about the proposed (draft) National Conservation Law and have any questions they may have answered. Please, read the Law (and the guide if you have any questions) then come to the meetings and make sure you tell us (using the feedback forms on this website or at the meetings) what you think of the law. It will be up to the public whether this Law goes further than the drafting stage.

A slightly later start than normal allowed us to enjoy Hollands win over Denmark! In a refreshing rain we set off to the Main channel, an omnious looking thunderstorm was passing over rum point.

PPP is always a nice dive and the Divers reported seeing 2 Hammerheads, a couple of turtles and Morays. The Lionfish catcher caught one, but the other team spotted 3 or 4 more, so we might have to go back to catch those.

Lemon wall for seconds, no Lionfish, but a number of close encounters with Eagle rays and a big Turtle made it a very nice dive. Still hardly any current on the North side, other than the tide running out. (The current was running down of the wall, rather than along the wall)

Boat Dive - Two Tanks - Lobster Pot
Divesite 1: Blue Pinacle
Divesite 2: Tarpon Alley West

(Peter Ogden)

It was time again to move the boat to the North. After some car shuffling, thanks Sahron and Peter, we set of from Lobster pot to the North side. Althought the forcast was for calm seas, the north side was pretty lumpy and we were all glad when we reach the Blue Pinacle for our first dive. We did not see the number of Lionfish we feared but did manage to catch one smallish one. Otherwise it is just nice to be back on the North. Peter was a little bit worse from the waves, so we anchored at Sting Ray city for the interval, where Sharon and Daniel did some LF spotting, but came back empty handed. Tarpong Alley for our second dive looked pretty green, but it was only the top 20ft, once below it cleared up nicely.

We made our way to Cooks Qauy where the boat will be docked for the season, thanks to Uli for letting us use his dock. We did make a quick getaway as England was about to kick-off against the USA in the world cup.

Divesite 1: 12 MILE BANKS
Divesite 2: Balboa

(Jack Stoffers)

Well we did go to 12 mile banks. We put down a shot line at the location we have for the wreck, but as yesterdays crew already found out, the wreck is not at this location. With the shot as a visual marker we started a search pattern, towing Jack on the tow board. Thirty minutes later and we still had not located it. It must be out there some where but we must be looking at the wrong place. Next time we have to widen the search pattern or get some new coords from the few people in the know.

We did drop down and had drift over the bank, some nice big groupers around. Almost at the end of the dive Jack spotted a biggish Lion fish, and Sharon went down to get it. She later claimed that he made her do it! Not that much arm twisting was required though.

For seconds we did the other extreme and dived the Balboa, a 30ft dive in George Town harbour. The Balboa site is deteriorating, with lots of the hard coral gone. It just to be a very pretty site/sight but is looking pretty drab these days.

Another nice day out on the water.

Peter is coming to do surface watch and keep an eye on us all.!

Possibly 12 mile banks dive today. We would like 8 divers (max depth 113ft) with some possible current. We intend to dive once on the wreck and possibly a second one nearer to home. Air or Nitrox is okay but be aware of the max operating depth of Nitrox 32, and the bottom time for air.
from Susan Harris (27 May 2010)
I'd love to do this but am on a fishing trip :(
